Harrison sucked on his teeth as he sat down. This was not the room Elijah had requested at reception. He curled his hands over the end of the double bed. “Funny looking twin room,” he said, and looked up at Elijah.

Elijah folded his arms. “I’ll go back down and get her to fix it.”

“I don’t mind if you don’t.” Harrison grinned and laid back on the double. When Elijah didn’t say anything, Harrison lifted his head from the mattress. “Come on. There’s plenty of space. You keep to your side. I’ll keep to mine.” He wasn’t sure what Elijah was thinking, but the man sure looked uncomfortable. “But if it’s going to be a problem, then—”

“The right. I’ll take the right side.” Elijah walked around the end of the bed and placed his flight bag on the armchair beside the window. He turned around and stared at Harrison.

“Oh,” Harrison said when he realized Elijah was waiting on him. He sat up, shuffling from the middle of the bed to the left. He pulled up his leg and smiled when Elijah sat down beside him. “You sure?” he checked. “We can get another room, or a second room, or whatever you want.” He appreciated what Elijah had already done for him, and he didn’t want to make the man feel uneasy, no matter how much he wanted him close. It was strange. He didn’t really know Elijah that well, but just having him near made everything easier, like he could cope with all the crap swirling around in his head.

“It’s fine,” Elijah assured him. He lay back on the bed and rested his hands over his stomach. “I could eat. You?”

Harrison sighed, lay on his side, and propped himself up on his arm. “Yeah.”

Elijah smiled. “Okay. How about we head down to the bar and get a sandwich or something?”

“Okay,” Harrison said softly.

Elijah looked at Harrison. Elijah’s eyes were filled with compassion and he hesitated, then reached out and pressed his hand to Harrison’s jaw. “It doesn’t look too bad.”

“You’re cold. That’s kind of nice.” Harrison winced as he pressed his face more firmly into Elijah’s hand.

“Does it hurt?”

Kevin had landed a couple of punches. A bruise had darkened the area under Harrison’s right eye, paired with the swollen side of his jaw. He hated to think what it looked like in natural light; the soft glow of the bathroom lighting had been enough to hint at what was there.

Harrison shrugged as he pulled away. Sitting up, he said, “Not as much as I deserve.”

“As if. You didn’t deserve that.” Elijah sat up. “Kevin’s just... He was looking for an excuse to kick off. You were just there.” Guilt crept into the way he held himself. “If I hadn’t talked back to Kevin maybe things wouldn’t have escalated like they had.”

“It’s not your fault.” Harrison tried to assure him. “I provoked him, and you can’t say I didn’t.”

“You did. And what? You thought him beating on you would make you feel better? Absolve you?”

Harrison snorted a laugh.
